Nielson gets early start on college
A 16-year-old junior at Fremont High School has decided to get an early start on college.
Nevaeh Nielsen said she plans to skip her senior year at FHS in order to start a nursing program at the College of Saint Mary’s in Omaha.
“I have been accepted into the College of Saint Mary’s Bachelors of Science in Nursing Program,” said Nielsen. “I chose to graduate early to get a head-start on my college education.”
Nielsen said working in the medical profession is something she’s wanted to do since middle school.
“I chose nursing,” Nielsen said, “because nursing is a good way to build strong relationships with my patients. I didn’t want to be in school for a long time, but I also wanted to have a vital role in healthcare - nursing is perfect for that.”
Attending the College of Saint Mary’s and entering the nursing program is just the start for Nielsen.
“I’m currently pursuing a career as a Registered Nurse,” Nielsen said, “but eventually I want to attend school for two more years to earn my degree as a CRNA, or a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.”
Nielsen said she’s looking forward to becoming a CRNA.
“Being an RN is a requirement for any CRNA program,” said Nielsen. “It will be a fun and important job, plus I can work in any medical setting of my choice. My goal is to work at a clinic so I can work clinic hours and have more time for my future family.”
Missing out on her senior year at FHS is a downside for Nielsen, but she is ready to start the next stage of her life.
“The hardest part of my decision would have to be that I have to leave my friends,” Nielsen said. “Sometimes I feel guilty and wish I would’ve stayed and had one more year with them, but I know that they’re proud of me and will always be here. I would not have the courage and motivation to take such a big step if it weren’t for my amazing support system.”
Along with the sadness of missing out on her senior year at FHS, Nielsen said there’s also a lot of excitement.
“I’m sad that I’m going to be missing out on memories with my friends and all of the exciting moments that come with being a senior,” Nielsen said, “but I’m more excited that I get to begin this next chapter in my life. I believe the pros of graduating early outweigh the cons of missing my senior year.”
